Computer disk drive supplier Seagate Technology has agreed to buy rival Maxtor Corp. for $1.9 billion in stock, the Wall Street Journal reported on Wednesday, citing people familiar with the matter.
The paper said the deal is expected to be unveiled later in the day, with Seagate planning to swap 0.37 of a Seagate share for each Maxtor share.
Under the terms of the deal, as reported by the Journal, the transaction is worth about $7.25 a share for Maxtor investors, a 60 percent premium to its closing price on Tuesday.
Both the Seagate and Maxtor boards have approved the deal, the paper reported, which will unit two big hard drive makers. The Journal, citing people familiar with the deal, said the companies are likely to argue to antitrust regulators that consumers would benefit because of cost efficiencies, among other things.

Neither Seagate nor Maxtor representatives could be immediately reached for comment.

Why is this a bad thing? Better Max-shiet then WD! Seagate drives are fab and quality. Maxtor drives.. esshh! Recommend Seagate drives to all my colleagues and clients - no issues. WDs have had issues in the past but every generation does have good and bad. I'm quite glad it wasn't Seagate being bought out. Ouch! That would not have been cool.

I've had two 120 gig ata maxtor drives for three years with no problems. I generally buy whatever is cheapest at the time and maxtor was always good for offering rebates. Seagate drives were nice but usually out of my price range. My only experiences with western digital drives (four years ago) were mixed. I think the quality of hard drives in general in declining though. There's a lot of pressure to bring prices down so they end up using cheaper materials and processes to build them.

I have had over fifteen drives over the years, first two were WD and one of those went TU. Switched to Maxtors and the next ten or so drives were great, then came the SATAs. I read a lot of info on SATAs and Seagate seemed to have the best specs so I brought a matched set to get the speed from RAID 0. One of those went T
U, sent it in for replacement and it has since went TU. I have now gone back to Maxtor, or so I thought. I will live with the merger, but.......
